Breakfast Recipe For Kids

If your kids are like most, getting out of bed in the morning is one of their least favorite things to do. The process of getting them out of bed is not top on the list for most parents, either! Get up! Get dressed! Make your bed! Eat breakfast! Brush your teeth! Don't miss the bus!

Breakfast � the most important meal of the day. Without the needed morning fuel, how can the rest of the day possibly go well, right? If it was entirely up to your child, he'd probably request chocolate cake and root beer for breakfast! No worries, breakfast doesn't have to be a bowl of thick, lumpy, tasteless oatmeal. There's a happy medium both parents and kids can live with.

For those kids who would rather just skip breakfast because they aren't hungry don't have time, smoothies make a quick nutritious drink. The kids are happy because it doesn't take long to chug it down and mom is happy because her students aren't leaving without a proper breakfast.

Try this breakfast recipe:

INGREDIENTS:
� 1 cup orange juice
� 1 cup raspberry yogurt
� 1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt
� 1/2 frozen banana (chunks)
� 1 1/2 cup frozen raspberries

PREPARATION:
Place all ingredients into a blender in the order listed. Blend at a low setting for the first minute, then the high setting until smooth. Serves 4.

Oatmeal certainly doesn't have to resemble wallpaper paste. Jazz it up with applesauce, brown sugar, cinnamon and fresh fruit. Just a spoonful of natural sweetness helps the lumpiness go down! Actually applesauce, brown sugar, cinnamon and fruit are wonderful staples to add to many breakfast items. Toss some in yogurt, on whole wheat toast, on top of cereal or add to grits!

"Here honey, eat a bran muffin before you go" doesn't sound nearly as inviting as "Are you ready for another peanut butter muffin?" Peanut butter is a good source of protein, Vitamin E, Niacin, Folate, Phosphorus and Magnesium.

Your kids will love this breakfast recipe:

INGREDIENTS:
� 2 eggs
� 1 c. milk
� 1/4 c. banana (about 1 banana), mashed with a fork
� 1/4 c. peanut butter
� 1/3 c. vegetable oil
� 1/4 c. frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed (left out of the freezer until it's soft)
� 1/4 c. nonfat dry milk
� 2 1/4 c. flour
� 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
� 1 tsp. baking soda
� nonstick spray

PREPARATION:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).

2. In a small bowl, break the eggs and use a fork to beat them a little bit.

3. In a large bowl, combine the milk, mashed banana, peanut butter, vegetable oil, apple juice, dry milk, and the eggs from the small bowl. Mix with a mixing spoon until the mixture is creamy.

4. Add the flour, baking powder, and baking soda into the large bowl. Mix again.

5. Line a muffin tine with paper liners or lightly spray with nonstick spray. Spoon in the muffin mix. Fill each muffin cup about 2/3 of the way up.

6. Bake for about 15 minutes.

7. When your muffins are finished baking, remove from muffin tin and cool them on the wire rack. Serves: 12

Childhood obesity has now become a worldwide problem. More and more children these days are suffering the same symptoms and diseases that were once only seen in adults; heart disease, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, to name just a few.

The good news and the bad news is that our children mimic everything we do. Your habits will sometimes become their habits (scary huh?). I’ll never forget when my old neighbors said to me, “Isabel, our 10 year old woke up this morning and ate leftover chicken and veggies for breakfast, instead of the bagels we bought. I wonder where she got that idea?” I loved it!

When parents bring in their children into my office wondering why their child’s weight has now become a health hazard, I always have to ask, “How is the whole family taking care of themselves or better yet, how are you taking care of yourself?”

I know this is a tough question to answer but these little people are looking to us for their answers and many times our actions speak louder than words. We are their role models. So as a mommy, daddy, aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa or just neighborhood friend, what can you do today to be a healthy influence to a child?

1. Develop one new health habit each week that involves your child. Want to go for a walk with Mommy to make our legs and our heart strong? Want to pack carrots in your lunch bag and see how many veggies we can both eat? Want to pick a healthy recipe and cook together? The options are endless. Make sure your child feels like he or she is an important part of your healthy life.

2. Let’s try and stay away from words like “weight loss” or “weight gain” and definitely avoid the word “fat”. Make it about “HEALTH”. We are going to take a family walk so we can all be healthy together. These foods make my heart and my muscles strong. Want to see Mommy or Daddy do pushups? Cool, right? Let your child know that being healthy is fun.

3. Be the healthy change you wish to see in your child. Show your child that genetics, time, and nothing else can get in the way of you getting healthy. Work on your biggest health obstacle and chances are you will see the same change in your child.

Ah, the joys of the Christmas season are nearly upon us. The laughter, gifts, lights, Christmas trees, candles... and then there is the cost, which can squeeze the joy right out of us leaving us feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.

How about you? Are you feeling overwhelmed thinking about the cost of the Christmas Season? You know what I mean, groceries, gifts and out of town guests. Well the good news is there is HOPE! You can save a substantial amount of money on groceries this season and I want to show you how!

Here are top ten ways to save money on groceries this Christmas:

1. Check Out Store Ads
Look through your area store’s ads. Go out on a limb and check out the stores that you don’t regularly shop at, especially the more expensive stores. I have found that the more expensive stores often have the best sale prices. You will have to discipline yourself to only buy sale items.

2. Take Time to Go to a Different Store
You can do this! I know this might be difficult for some of you loyal grocery store shoppers, but going to another store will give you access to more sale items. You don’t have to make it a big chore, just plan on swinging by the other store on your way home one day. Make it a part of something you are already doing.

3. Stock Up
When you find a good deal, STOCK UP! Are you listening? STOCK UP! The better the deal the more you should stock up! I just looked at the Walgreen’s ad and it has crackers on sale for .50 a box, limit 4. I will get 4!

4. Clip Coupons
No need to panic. It’s not that difficult. It is quite simple. Just get a Sunday paper, pull out the coupons and clip the ones you want. Shh… deep breaths… you can do this. All you have to do is clip and organize and you are on your way to even greater savings. If this really makes your head spin, you don’t have to clip coupons, but it helps. 5. Match the Coupons with the Sales
Once you have your coupons clipped, look through the store ads and see if you have coupons for what is on sale.

6. Make a List
While you are looking through the ads, make a list. I like to write the item on the list that I want to buy and also make a note if I have a coupon that I want to use.

7. Stock Up on Stocking Stuffers
Keep an eye out for sales on Christmas candy for stocking stuffers. One bag here and one bag there keeps you from having to pay full price the week before Christmas.

8. Buy a Little Extra Each Week
Start buying a little extra each week. We have a great clam dip recipe and bought a couple of cans of clams last week. They never go on sale, but trying to spread out the cost of holiday meals each week helps.

9. Don’t Forget Pharmacies
Walgreens and CVS often have GREAT deals. Don’t forget to check out their sales.

10. Plan
Plan out what types of meals and recipes you will be using. What food do you need? Make a list now and keep it with you.

If you follow these top ten ideas, they should keep you from having a $300 shopping extravaganza the week before Christmas, when your budget has already been stretched to the max.

Baby animals, stories, pictures, video, and computers are things that interest today’s children. Smart Kids Publishing has combined all of these elements in its My Animal Family series for children aged three to eight. Each book in the series tells the story of a day in the life of a baby animal in the wild and comes with a secret passcode that allows access to online “habitats” where children can play games and earn points, plus a DVD with live action footage of the baby animal, shot by the BBC.

Smart Kids Publishing, based in Carlsbad, California, was created in the mid-1990s. It publishes about thirty books per year, many of which contain educational elements. Others are simply “really sweet and good for one-on-one cuddle time,” publisher Paula Fitzgerald told FTW.

“The idea for this series evolved about two years ago,” she said. “Someone sent us the BBC footage and we were very impressed. We were also fascinated with the way kids were using the Internet. We wanted to bridge print with the Internet world. Kids are so media-oriented. They’re natural born clickers and they’re used to movement.”

Nanuq: A Baby Polar Bear’s Story (978-0-8249-1818-7) is the latest book in the series. It follows Nanuq and her brother Suka as they accompany their mother across glaciers and through snow and wind. The baby bears hunt, swim, and play: “We rolled and slid and growled like grownup bears. Suka held me down and pretended like we were fighting,” Nanuq tells young readers.

When kids receive the book, they are invited to register online at the safe Web site. Each new book allows users to access new habitats and play new games.

Kathleen Duey (whose 2007 young adult book won a silver medal in the National Book Awards) authored the first four books in the series. She did extensive research on the animals that are the subjects of these books, and even read recent dissertations.

Her research led to some of the interesting details contained in the books, like the fact that elephants can “hear” other stomping elephants through the ground. They use their toes to sense when herds are approaching and to communicate when they are separated from their own herd. These details are incorporated into Ella: A Baby Elephant’s Story (978-0-8249-5584-7). Ella and the female members of her family travel together across the African Savannah from grassy patch to grassy patch. Ella protects her newborn cousin from hyenas and hopes to someday be the leader of her own pack, like her grandmother.

Illustrator Lara Gurin worked on all four of the first books in the series, using digital fine art, which gives the animals and their environments dimension and warmth.

The other two books currently in the series are Leo: A Baby Lion’s Story (978-0-8249-1817-0) and Korow: A Baby Chimpanzee’s Story (978-0-8249-1816-3). Fitzgerald says the complete series will contain about twenty-four books. The remaining twenty will be released over the next two years. The next two books will focus on hippopotamuses and snow geese.

“We really wanted to enchant children with the beauty of the natural world, and educate them because they are the next generation of conservators,” Fitzgerald said. “But we didn’t want to be dry and pedantic. The Web site is very interactive, and every page includes schooling in keyboarding and skills they need. All the pages use math and reading skills.”

She says that one of the best things about the series is that kids can have fun both independently and with their families. The Web site is safe and contains no ads, so once children are logged in, they require little supervision as they explore and play games. Fitzgerald also says that her two teenage sons love the DVD footage, which small kids can watch with their whole family.

“The DVDs tell another story about the baby animal featured in the book,” she explained. “They are narrated by a child, and there’s a slideshow of facts and a sing-along song that uses the rhythms and instruments of the country the baby animal comes from.”

Fitzgerald said the feedback about the series has been great. People are very taken by the illustrations. They also like that the DVD is narrated with a child’s voice.

Like other books from Smart Kids Publisher, proceeds from these books will be donated to help underprivileged children in the U.S. The company plans to allow libraries to get one copy of any book in the series free when they buy one copy.

Has anyone ever bought a convertible crib, the kind that transforms from a crib, to a toddler bed, then a full-sized bed? Are they worth the extra money? I'll pay for a good quality one if I know it will last, but I don't want to waste my money on something that I hoped would last 18 years only to have it fall apart when the child is out of diapers. If you are going to use the crib for only one child, it makes sense. No need to buy new beds as the child grows.

If you are going to have more than one child (or plan to), then the convertible part of the crib likely won't get used. By the time the first child is ready for a toddler bed (or a full-sized bed), there will be another baby who needs the crib, and therefore, it will remain a crib.

Think about how your home is arranged and what will help you function best. Toddler beds can be very inexpensive, or you can just buy a crib mattress or a twin mattress and put it on the floor of a childproofed room.

Convertible Crib Makes Transitions Easier

We chose to buy this type of crib when our daughter was born in May 2005, and I have been really pleased with it. Although it was a little more expensive than a standard crib, I really appreciated not having to sell a crib and buy a toddler bed when she was ready to make the transition. As a matter of fact, we tried to make the transition to the toddler bed last December, and we found she just wasn't ready yet. It was so easy to put the crib rail back on the bed and try again a few months later. We were able to let our daughter go at her own speed. We love how this crib has worked for our family. Convertible Crib Was Too Flimsy

Save your money. I wish I had. The convertible set we got wasn't the finest on the market. It was too flimsy for a little boy who liked to jump on the bed. By the time he was old enough for the twin bed, we had lost all of the parts, and it was scuffed and worn. We ended up getting him an antique sleigh bed and then not too much later we got bunk beds for him and his little brother. Therefore, I would advise saving your money and getting a well-made crib that you can use for your next child.

My Convertible Crib Was Worth Every Penny!

I bought one of those really expensive cribs that converts. It was the best purchase we made for our son, who's now eight. When crib time was done, I broke it down to the toddler bed, and when he outgrew that, it became his kid bed. That crib lasted seven years. I had to buy him a twin size bed because he's so tall, but yes, it's worth the money.

I'd Buy a Convertible Crib Again in a Heartbeat

My parents bought me a convertible crib when I found that I was pregnant with baby #3, which was when baby #2 was only 2-1/2 months old. That was nine years ago! This crib is still in use. In its first 18 months, it was a crib for #2. Then, it was a toddler bed for three more years until #2 and #3 moved to twin beds. It was then placed in the playroom as a daybed/couch until early 2006 when it became a crib again for baby #4. It became a toddler bed again about a year ago, but baby #5 is due in May 2009, so it will become a crib again before long. I have not had the chance to use it as a headboard for full bed yet, but it has more than paid for itself. It is a Delta LUV crib in a natural color. It is not one of the bulky heavy beds either and the drop rail installs and removes in minutes and stores easily behind or under the crib. If I found myself in the market for another crib, I'd definitely get a convertible one.

The Convertible Crib Did Not Work for Me

I received a convertible crib while expecting my son, thinking it would be all I ever needed. Ben was very content to stay in his crib until he was about two years. He never attempted to crawl out, which makes me think he must have liked his nursery. Anyway, I completely skipped over the toddler style assembly and tried to assemble a "big boy" bed at three years. I assume you have assembled a frame before so you know that the long rails have metal "hooks" that are supposed to slide into "slats" in a headboard.

Well, the piece of crib that was supposed to serve as a headboard had no "slats" only holes that fit the original design of the crib. The piece was also so heavy that there was no way to push it up against a wall without any support.

Long story short, I was not able to use the crib for its intended purposes. If it saves you any money buy purchasing just a crib, I'd do so and avoid staring at pieces in your garage like I do!

Fire safety tips to share with your children:

Smoke alarms help keep you safe. When you hear the sound from a smoke alarm, it is telling you to "Get out! get out!"

In case of fire, be sure to crawl low under the smoke on your hands and knees--the air is cleaner and cooler there.

It is important to have an escape map and an outside meeting place. A tree, a mailbox, or a fence may make good meeting places.

Have a home escape map and practice your home fire drill with your family two times a year.

Firefighters help us to stay safe. They know how to put out fires. Firefighters wear special clothes to keep them safe. They will come to help you.

For parents:

1. One of the most important tools to help you stay safe from fire is a working smoke alarm. It can help save your life and the lives of your loved ones. According to the Home Safety Council, more than 95% of the households in a 2004 phone survey had at least one smoke alarm. Approximately half of all home fire-related deaths occurred in the roughly 5% of homes without smoke alarms. However, in homes with smoke alarms in which home fires were reported, 65% of those homes had smoke alarms that did not work. Common reasons for non-working smoke alarms were missing, dead, or disconnected batteries.

2. When a fire occurs, the air is cleaner and cooler 12-24 inches from the floor. Children should realize the importance of crawling on their hands and knees, not on their bellies.

3. Be sure to have a designated meeting place and be sure everyone in your household knows and understands where the meeting place is. A tree, fence, mailbox, or even the neighbor's house may make good meeting places.

4. Sit down with your family and make an escape map. Know two ways out of every room. Practice your home fire drill using your escape map two times a year.

5. Many times children tend to hide from firefighters during an actual fire-related situation. Children need to know that firefighters are helpers and are their friends and are there to help them.

The answer is VARIETY!

Babies interact with the world using all five senses, not just their eyes. This is even more true for young infants than it is for older children and adults. Young babies cannot fully focus their eyes yet, and infants have trouble distinguishing some colors from others. (This is why first toys are often red, black, and white - the first colors a baby can see.) However, they are learning to explore their surroundings by much more than sight. A great baby toy can stimulate his sense of touch by using different textures, or it can help him learn sounds by offering music or sounds like crinkling paper or a bell. These are the easiest senses to work with in a baby - smell and taste come later, because you can’t ask a baby to smell a scratch-and-sniff book, and toys shouldn’t go in his mouth anyway!

The most important aspect of any baby toy is the chance it gives you and your baby to communicate with each other. After all, your baby wants your attention and love more than any toy on the planet, so choose toys that give you and your baby a lot of together time. 1. Set Grounds Rules For Your Potty Training.
Potty Training Rules let you, your child, and others who watch your child know what is and what will be expected to get the job done quickly. One of the rules could be "If you stay dry you get to wear your favorite underwear I bought you!" "If you stay dry all day you get to put a sticker on the chart." Be creative think of your own incentive or ask other moms.

2. Get Your Support Group On The Same Page.
At the very beginning of your potty training, it is very important to clearly communicate with your spouse, babysitter, and child the ground rules for the potty training. The more consistent your support group sticks to the rules and laid out incentives, the better off you are. This way your child can know what to do and what to expect.

3. Make It A Big Deal. If the child goes to the potty praise him/her over and over. Make a special call to a family member or friend and tell them the good news as your child listens to you. Give small rewards to your child each little step that is taken towards the goal of the potty training.
